Pocatello ranked #5 for Outdoor Magazine's Best Fishing Towns in 2009!

Public hunting land surrounds Pocatello. The Caribou National Forest to the east hosts awesome mule deer and elk hunting, and BLM land southwest of town is a top spot for prairie grouse. The nearby Fort Hall Indian Reservation, as well as public refuges along the Snake River to the west, is home to incredible waterfowling.

A constellation of reservoirs—American Falls, Devils Creek, Soda Springs, Glendale and Chesterfield—provide local boaters, and icefishermen in winter, with stillwater fishing for everything from perch to overfed rainbows. The tailwater below the American Falls dam is the easternmost water in the country in which to find white sturgeon. Ice Fishing is popular too!

JOGGING and WALKING are nice in several areas including 12 miles of Portneuf Greenway along the river in town. RUNNING is popular at several scheduled 5 & 10K events plus a certified MARATHON each Labor Day weekend.  Dedicated cycling lanes in town, Fitness & Aerobics Centers abound, including in the larger hotels.
Mountain and Street Bikes can find a pleasant ride on several well marked city and campus bike lanes, especially Bannock Highway on the west side. The same Sister Cities Park and City Creek Trail offer greater challenge. The Portneuf Greenway is open to bikers with a courtesy eye out for runners and walkers.

HIKING is enjoyed on the same challenging trails with the added benefit of being able to get further up the mountains, especially the west bench.

  • Visitor Information

Pocatello is known as the “Gateway to the Northwest” (or "Gate City" by the locals). Pioneers, gold miners and settlers who traveled the Oregon Trail passed through our gates. Stage and freight lines and the railroad soon followed, turning our community into the trade center and transportation junction it is today.

Whether you're passing through or planning to stay for a while, Pocatello has a century-long tradition of welcoming everyone.

Come and see. You'll love where you visit!
